Welcome our new employees

 After graduating, I worked in the advertising and design industry. After a few years in advertising agencies, I was ready to experience a new environment, so I started as a consultant at Bekk. I stayed at Bekk for four years working on several small- and large-scale projects.


When did you first hear about reMarkable?

It goes way back, very early in reMarkable's journey. Back in 2014, the founders needed some design help, so they asked me. I was introduced to the concept and their ambitions. At that time, a physical product hadn’t existed yet, and they didn't call themselves reMarkable. I remember thinking how cool it seemed and it piqued my curiosity.

Since then, I've kept track and watched the company grow. It has succeeded beyond expectations. In the end, it felt strange not to join. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

A Norwegian company that creates its own hardware and earns international success is awe-inspiring, and of course, a huge incentive for joining. Another factor was the highly ambitious vision statement. reMarkable is already a success story, but the company's potential is still immense, and its future is full of possibilities.

What’s the most significant difference between reMarkable and your previous employer?

I've often built web pages and developed solutions for apps. So the big difference is to work on a physical device with so many limitations. However, these limitations and restrictions create some fascinating possibilities and challenges that I can't wait to tackle.

My previous job was in consulting, where I’d work on a project over a defined period, and then other people would often complete it. Never following a project from start to finish can sometimes be a bit disheartening. At reMarkable, you're part of everything and working towards a long-term goal.

Now that we are back at the office, how would you describe the culture?

I immediately got a good impression. It seems like everyone is helpful, cheerful, and passionate about doing great work.

I also knew a few people at reMarkable before I applied. They are all so dedicated and experienced. Learning from and working with each of them were reasons for me to start working here.

Honestly, I'm a bit of a nerd. I just renovated a house and love quality materials. I believe reMarkable has done an excellent job with their offices. They manage to keep the original features and raw materials while also making them modern and timeless. It's thorough and on-brand, manifesting their “better thinking” philosophy for different people and processes.

Finally, what are some of your goals as Senior Visual Designer?

My main goal is to establish a solid visual language across all devices and services to make people think better. I’d also like to create a better design system, and I want to challenge everything.

Audun Stien

Meet our new employee, Audun Stien!

 I studied at the University of Oslo, Blindern campus. My degree is in physics, specializing in measurement techniques, electronics, and programming.

 I've worked almost exclusively with programming and software. For nine years, I worked at NRK with test-driven development (TDD) and automation.

I first heard about reMarkable a couple of years ago. A former colleague showed off one of her fancy new gadgets. It was right after reMarkable launched their first device, and it was instantly a talking point. It created a buzz around the office. Since then, I have seen a lot of articles and media coverage on reMarkable and its employees.

Last year, I noticed a colleague quit her job at NRK and started at reMarkable. I remember thinking that was both cool and encouraging.

I worked for nine years at the same place because I didn't want to leave. NRK was a great employer. I felt both seen and heard there, but when reMarkable sent me a message, it was hard to look the other way.

I think it's astonishing that this Norwegian tech company creates everything itself. It's not just another solution for the web, not just another simple application or service any company can come up with in a short time. They have done the whole shebang, from hardware to software to applications. That’s incredibly impressive, and it means people have to be both skilled and creative there. It's pretty motivating and inspiring having those people as my colleagues and on my team.

The most obvious difference is that NRK is a state-owned company, not a commercial one. Besides that, I don't think the differences are that immense. NRK is an ambitious company and always strives to be the best. However, reMarkable as an organization is much less top-heavy and has fewer middlemen with strong opinions, making work processes more efficient.

As a young tech scaleup, you have to make it. This creates a more ambitious and energetic culture.

Finally, what's something you're looking forward to at reMarkable?

I like the vision statement, “Better thinking through technology,” personally. I probably need it too. In a world where we are more and more digitally distracted, this kind of approach is crucial. It's also full of challenges and limitations, which will be fun and unique to test and qualify.

Aril Spetalen

Meet our new employee, Aril Spetalen!

 Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) from European University, Barcelona.

 After graduating, I worked in advertising for agencies like SMFB, Paradox, and Stig & Stein. I worked as a producer and managing director for Animasjonsdepartementet for eight years.

I've been a curious bystander from the beginning, paying close attention to product development and wondering what the company will do next. Honestly, I believe it's one of the coolest companies in Norway at the moment.

It’s a really nice feeling to read a job application and instantly know that this is it. This is what I want.

It's a unique opportunity to be able to contribute to the reMarkable journey. I'm both proud and happy I get to be a part of it.

I also believe my experience working with both creatives and suppliers will be valuable for my team. reMarkable Brands is a small and relatively new venture, and I can't wait to build, develop, and produce successful brand initiatives.

What are you looking forward to in your new role?

There are several things I'm looking forward to with this job!

I can't wait for a new challenge that will help me broaden my experience, and I believe this industry change will do just that. I’m also eager to build new working relationships and learn new things.

On a general note, I'm excited and curious about the tasks and projects we’ll be working on daily. I'm looking forward to getting to know the culture and the people, and experiencing their drive and talents. This new team gives me so much positive energy. I'm very motivated to see the impact of our work.

Any final thoughts you’d like to share?

Most of us find ourselves scrolling through Facebook, swiping nonstop on Instagram Stories, or absorbed in our Twitter feed without even being aware that we opened the app.

It's unique working towards a vision statement about better thinking. The vision makes sense. We need to get our brains back. For me, the concept is genuinely inspiring, and I can't wait to see where we'll take it in the future.

Jannecke Østvold Møller

Meet our new employee, Jannecke Østvold Møller!

 Senior Strategy Manager, Product Management

 Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Computer Engineering from Oslo University College (OsloMet) and a Master of Science (MSc) in IT Software Systems from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland.

I have a wide variety of experience from different roles throughout my career. I’ve worked as an IT manager in the Norwegian branch of one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, as a full-stack web developer in both Scotland and Norway, as an IT consultant, and in high-level technical and commercial roles in the telecom industry.

Before reMarkable, I worked for about six years at Telia and Get. After about two and a half years in high-level technical product roles at Telia, I wanted to transition to the commercial side, so I started as a product manager for broadband at Get. Telia acquired Get shortly after. In my last position at Telia, I was the Commercial Manager for fixed broadband, responsible for the P&L, product and strategy, value-added services, and fixed telephony. After a long period in the telecom industry, I felt I was ready for another stage in my career. I also wanted to continue growing and learning and take on some new challenges that I hadn't had the opportunity to embark on in my previous roles.

Well, I'm sort of a geek/techie. Even though I worked within a more financial area for several years, my passion, without a doubt, is technology.

If you constantly keep up to date with technology and what it means for our world, you've noticed reMarkable. A Norwegian tech company that is making B2C tablets… that's breaking news.

But honestly, before researching, I knew almost nothing about the people behind the product or how they work.

There are many advantages to joining a company that's snowballing, but one of the most significant advantages is that they offer opportunities faster to their employees.

Going from corporate to scaleup can be risky, but I think you can trust your judgment if you know people love the product, you know great people work there, and you can tell it's gaining loyal users. Then you don't need to overthink it.

Working with all parts of a company and learning and contributing somewhere where almost everything is in-house was something on my wish list. To be able to do that at reMarkable was too good of an opportunity to turn down, and one I probably would never get again.

I have two little girls at home so what's most important to me is work-life balance. I've experienced a high degree of trust and openness here. It's less about dividing the hours in your day evenly between work and personal life and more about having the flexibility to get things done while still having the time and energy to be a parent.

At reMarkable, it's also like being amongst friends. No one is afraid to speak their mind, and every person is appreciated equally. Everyone is curious, wants to learn from each other, and is happy to share their valuable knowledge. People are highly skilled but down-to-earth and humble. Amazingly, the company has found many like-minded people, and I believe the culture is a unique composition of competence and personalities.

It's still early, but I've never been more satisfied as an employee.

What are some of your goals as Senior Strategy Manager in Product Management?

I want to be part of the global journey, create sustainable financial and market growth, grow loyalty, and create a position in the market that makes people genuinely fond of our brand.

I also want to work with the commercial as well as the technical parts of the organization. I believe doing both will create opportunities for reMarkable, and I can't wait to contribute.

Working dynamically and ensuring competence and knowledge are used in the best way possible for the company, no matter your job title, is rare. I know reMarkable will succeed with this in-house strategy. It's incredible how much people can get done through internal company transparency and working together towards the same goal.

Stian Dalviken

Meet our new employee, Stian Dalviken!

 BSc in Mechanical Engineering, Innovation & Design from KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden

I worked with Subsea Technology in the oil and gas industry for 13 years. Over that time, I had many different roles. They were mainly within the development of new complex subsea systems and products, but I also worked as a product manager. In my last position at my previous employer Aker Solutions, I worked as a global product manager for the portfolio of underwater connection systems and structures.

There were plenty of reasons for me to join reMarkable. I love working with energetic teams full of drive and ambition. Also, after many years in the same industry, I was ready for new challenges and to broaden my area of expertise and knowledge.

My passion is product development. I'm always looking ahead and thinking about future needs. This approach keeps me motivated. When I bought a reMarkable 2, I was immensely impressed by what the team had achieved. I didn't want to miss out on being a part of the next big thing.

I'm everything but spontaneous when it comes to these kinds of decisions. I do a lot of research before making up my mind. Reading about the company and meeting the team convinced me, and then everything just fell into place.

Well, it's a pretty big transition going from a company with over 15,000 employees in 20 countries to a company with about 200 employees, and it's a pretty big step going from the oil and gas industry to consumer electronics.

Some of the other more significant differences are the types of technology, the product volumes, the unrestricted way of working, and the ability to strongly influence the processes and products. I'm really looking forward to being a part of this.

Becoming a part of the team and getting to know the culture happened faster than I anticipated. I felt comfortable almost at once, even though I was changing both industry and way of working. That was beyond my expectations.

The small number of employees at reMarkable need to handle many different responsibilities. A scaleup needs problem solvers, people who love challenges and never stop being curious. I believe this kind of mindset is crucial, and I've found that is definitely what it’s like at reMarkable. The level of competence is astonishing and everyone is super dedicated, which is truly inspiring.

Finally, what are some of your goals as Senior NPI Manager?

I have many ambitious goals, but mainly it's about utilizing my expertise and knowledge to push reMarkable further. This role motivates me to explore my talents and gives me the opportunity to grow both professionally and personally.

Viktor Grennberg

Meet our new employee, Viktor Grennberg!

 Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from BI Norwegian Business School

As a 21-year-old, while still studying, I co-founded Rotor, the first specialized employer branding agency in Norway, along with three friends. I had a great time, learned a boatload, and got to work with several large clients. Since then, I have worked in performance marketing and management in different ways, specializing in Facebook ads. Most recently, I was co-owner and head of the paid social team at Fullstakk.

I met Sigurd Gran-Jansen at a marketing conference in Stockholm back in 2017. We have stayed in touch since then. At first, I had no idea that the device would catch on like it has, but I have been watching reMarkable grow exponentially since then. Four years later, when the Platform Lead role was announced, I decided to apply and join Sigurd’s team.

There is not a lack of ambition among startups, but it is not as common to have a vision that extends beyond creating and selling a cool or useful product. What makes the difference to me is reMarkable’s dedication to the ultimate goal of better thinking, as opposed to just selling cool paper tablets. An organization like this is something you don’t see very often. There are a couple of Norwegian consumer electronics brands, but as far as I know, none have grown to this size since the radio manufacturer Tandberg in the 1930s.

Considering my field, few Norwegian brands operate at a scale that truly allows for robust performance marketing, where you have numbers big enough to run experiments that give significant results on both the complex strategic decisions and the smaller details. In turn, we are able to make accurate decisions and bring the art of marketing closer and closer to perfection.

Last but not least, I just like the people here. I could give a list of cliché adjectives, but there is an unusually strong priority on building culture and recruiting the right people here. Also, not many marketers get to get this close to entirely different fields, such as physical product design, supply chain management, retail, and app development. I guess I’m a bit curious about other fields after many years of jobs narrowly focused on marketing.

Has reMarkable lived up to your expectations?

Any words of advice for prospective employees?

Have fun, ask for help and advice when you need it, and always assume people are on your side. So far, I have not seen any petty company politics, intrigues, or sharp elbows. For those familiar with improv theater, everyone has a “yes, and” attitude here, listening to and building on ideas and initiatives. Keep doing the same in return, and you'll love it here. Honestly, the onboarding process will give you all the advice you will need.

Finally, what are some of your goals as Platform Lead?

My top priority is hiring the best specialists within all the relevant fields, building a healthy and thriving culture in my team, and establishing routines that facilitate great work and cooperation with other teams within the company. I’d also like to discover and prioritize the most effective marketing platforms, tools, and ways to work. Apart from that, I just want to do great things, learn stuff, and have fun.

Henrik Sandsmark

Meet our new employee, Henrik Sandsmark!

I went to school in Trondheim and Dublin and finished my BA (Hons) in Interior Design and Architecture at Griffith College Dublin.

Before reMarkable, I worked for an interior architect firm in Oslo for three years. The position gave me several opportunities to evolve as a designer, and I had the chance to be a part of both small- and large-scale projects.

In addition to working as an interior architect, I've done several exhibitions during my career. Working with storytelling in a multidisciplinary team has probably made a significant impact on my design approach, and I believe it has been valuable when creating engaging branded environments.

I'm not quite sure when I first heard about reMarkable. Being one of the nominees at the DOGA awards, the whole firm watched the ceremony together. When reMarkable received their award, we were highly impressed by the brand and its purpose.

Shortly after, our boss announced that we would all receive a reMarkable 2 as a gift. Since then, I have seen and heard about the brand everywhere.

I had no intention of leaving my previous job. I was thriving and planned to stay for a while. So it surprised me when I saw a job announcement I was suddenly interested in applying for, one which made me ready to leave my current position.

The role description sounded super interesting, and I was immediately intrigued. For my bachelor's degree, I wrote about the future of retail, and I believe reMarkable can create a path for others to follow.

Without knowing what was to come, I felt a sense of urgency. I was certain that I'd regret it if I didn't jump on this unique opportunity.

Being part of a company that is growing and exploring new things is a fantastic opportunity. If you want to work with the future of retail, getting a job at reMarkable at this crucial phase is a chance of a lifetime.

Working for a Norwegian tech company whose quality and design are significant values that drive every aspect of what it does is a key motivator for me as a designer, not to mention all the talented and fun employees. It's hard not to thrive.

Finally, what are you looking forward to in your new role?

I'm looking forward to working cross-functionally with different design disciplines and with the future of retail. How will the brand attract, engage and loyalize consumers? I can't wait to test and find out!

Emily Thoresen

Meet our new employee, Emily Thoresen!

 Master of Science (MSc) in Economics and a MSc in International Business Studies from CBS in Copenhagen, Denmark. 

My previous job was at Telia Enterprise, where I was a part of the commercial management team, leading the small- and medium-sized business (SME) segment team.

My main responsibility was to deliver on the strategic ambitions and service revenue targets in the SME segment together with sales. I also had to define the segment & GTM strategy, drive the commercial development agenda, and mobilize the organization to deliver on our targets and plans. It was both exciting and educational. I planned to stay at Telia, but then reMarkable contacted me.

I believe it was when reMarkable 2 was selected as one of the Best Inventions of 2020 by TIME magazine. I was immensely impressed. I've always worked in tech, and I must say this paper tablet is genuinely one of Norway's most exciting tech inventions.

When reMarkable called, I immediately felt curious and wanted to learn more. I thought it sounded like both a challenging and unusual role. My background consists of business development and strategy. I led the business development team at Canal Digital Satellite for four years, so I also felt that it might be a perfect fit.

I think it clicked already in my first interview. I was positively surprised by the company's focus on culture and people. Many organizations tell you it's a primary focus, but with reMarkable, they truly believe it. It's a core value throughout the strategy. I remember the interviewer told me my experience was great, but it was equally as important that I wanted to work towards the vision statement and build a team, not a personal status. That was music to my ears.

The first thing that grabbed my attention was the thought that I’d be working for a global tech scaleup based in Norway that produces a product I love, a company with great potential that’s in a growth phase. The thing that tipped me over the edge was reMarkable’s extraordinary focus on well-being and a healthy company culture and, of course, all the really nice and smart people I met during the interview process.

They have! A great company culture inherently promotes curiosity, respect, teamwork, and employee health in combination with a dedication to succeed and deliver results.

Everyone is super friendly and open, and there’s always room for discussions and asking questions. It’s lovely to see this healthy and dynamic culture and be a part of it. After only two weeks, I could recognize everything they had described in the interview: curiosity, helpfulness, and dedication.

My main goal is to add value and contribute to delivering great results for the company as well as my team. I feel reMarkable is just in the starting phase. I can't wait to learn how they work and positively impact different processes and results.

Most companies want an agile environment, and though they report some use of agile practices, implementation is not broad or deep. reMarkable seems to have cracked the code, and I can't wait to embrace these principles.

I'm also looking forward to the famous parties. I know they prioritize celebrating hard work, and I think it's fantastic that the organization wants to create fun memories. We spend a lot of our time at work, so it's essential to have fun and enjoy everyday life.

Astrid Østebø

Meet our new employee, Astrid Østebø!

 Bachelor’s degree in Web Development from Business Academy Aarhus in Denmark

I started my career studying multimedia design. On top of that, I earned a bachelor’s degree in web development. It was supposed to teach me everything – marketing, programming, and UI/UX design. It's pretty hard to know it all, so I decided to focus on design. It became clear that design was my true passion. While studying, I started designing mobile apps with some programmers I met to get more hands-on experience. Before joining reMarkable, I worked as a UI/UX designer for a Danish game development company for seven years.

I moved to Norway about a year ago, but I knew of reMarkable before that. I guess I'd seen ads and read about them in different tech magazines.

I liked the company's purpose. Plus, I'm a gadget nerd. Growing up, I remember all the super cool devices in James Bond and Batman movies. I also had so many phones that it's almost embarrassing, and at that time, I read a ton of tech magazines.

The reMarkable paper tablet is different, though. It's innovative and forward thinking even though it's based on pretty old-fashioned technology. It's the best of both worlds, and that is unique and super exciting to me.

I’d been working with game design for seven years. While it was cool to develop games people loved, I felt ready for more complex challenges. I'm excited to be a part of something more serious, something more meaningful. Game technology and design are all about creating something different from the competitors, some cool plug-ins or just a distinctive looking universe, but the primary goal is to make money and entertain. 

reMarkable is different. You can see how this product can help people in their everyday lives and how the brand can make a difference by making people think and work better without any distractions.

Yes, even more than expected. reMarkable is excellent at creating expectations, but they are even better at living up to them.

I have met only cheerful and bright people who are passionate about their work. When I worked in Denmark, I considered myself lucky as an employee regarding social investments and culture, but it seems even better here. They have an extremely high standard, and they understand the importance of having fun with your coworkers.

Finally, what are some of your goals as Senior UX Designer?

Well, meeting the users’ needs is the bare minimum. A great UX designer is a forward thinker who doesn't just settle for executing the design but strives for optimal results.

Another goal is to think proactively, by testing, asking the right questions, and doing thorough research. We need to understand our users' needs, what they don’t need, and, most importantly, what they don't know they need.

I want to help create even more magical experiences when using reMarkable by making it more intuitive, faster, and more enjoyable—paired with the distraction-free experience that allows for better thinking.
